USS Constitution defeated British warship HMS Guerriere U.S. used privateers to help fight against superior British Navy. America wanted to take Canada from G.B. British & Indian forces led by Tecumseh captured Fort Detroit in July 1812!

U.S. captured and burned Canadian capital, York!! Captain Oliver Hazard Perry was told to get control of Lake Erie! Built his own fleet of warships!!! Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813 “We have met the enemy and they are ours!” Big victory for United States- controlled Gr. Lakes Battle of Lake Erie-1814

Gen. William Henry Harrison pursued British & Indian forces into Canada. Battle of Thames October 1813 American victory- Tecumseh was killed! Secured Northwest territory for U.S. William Henry Harrison

Andrew Jackson Creek Indians, led by Chief Red Eagle, destroyed Fort Mims-killed 250!! Andrew Jackson led American forces against the Creek! Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1814-Creek Indians were defeated! Creek War came to an end!! They gave up millions of acres of land!

British attack Washington, D.C. in 1814. President Madison had to run for his life! Burned White House & Capital!!! British then attacked Baltimore & Fort McHenry-shelled fort for 25 hours! It did not fall! Frances Scott Key witnessed this battle-wrote Star Spangled Banner!

Battle of New Orleans- January 8, 1815 British-5,300 troops - Americans- 4,500 Andrew Jackson was U.S. commander 2,000 British casualties- 70 American This battle occurred after the war was over!

Hartford Convention called by Federalists! Met to talk about secession & states rights War ended before they could do anything- they lost much of their power as a result! Treaty of GhentTreaty of Ghent-ended the war of 1812 Signed December 24, 1814 Agreed to end the war & return all conquered territory. Nothing was gained by either side!!!
