2. What were the Causes of the War? 1) Many Americans blamed the British for Native American’s attacks on Western settlements. 2) Britain seized American ships that were bringing goods to the French. (America claimed the status of a neutral nation.) 3) The British also seized many of the sailors and impressed them into the British Navy. - The Policy of Impressment proved the biggest issue. 4) War Hawks in power in Congress. Resented the fact that Britain had continuing influence on American affairs.

4. War of 1812 Highlights 1) Washington D.C. burned by the British in 1814. - Dolley Madison saved a portrait Washington as she fled the Whitehouse. 2) Battle at Fort McHenry. Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner. 3) Fort Mackinac = 1 st land battle in the United States of America 4) Andrew Jackson wins the Battle of New Orleans after the Treaty of Ghent was signed and the war was officially over.

5. What were the effects of the War? 1) British agreed to evacuate their Western posts. 2) Not losing the war allowed Americans to feel they had ended their colonial dependency. At the same time it convinced the British to stop viewing America as its colony. 3) The War of 1812 is one of America’s most divisive wars in our History. - Most historians view it as unnecessary and a dangerous risk. 4) Biggest Loser: The Northwestern Native Americans and their southern allies. Britain abandoned its alliance with the Native Americans in the Treaty of Ghent. American settlers move West again in 1815.
