C AUSES OF THE W AR 1. 1808-1811 British impressed over 6,000 American soldiers 2. Chesapeake Leopard Affair British captain fired on the USS Chesapeak 3 dead, 18 wounded British officials said it was an accident Jefferson responds Forbade British ships to dock in American ports Ordered state governments to call on militiamen

I MPORTANT E VENTS The US declares war in June 1812 US made several unsuccessful invasions into Canada Tecumseh is killed in the Battle of Thames Star Spangled Banner is written The White House and the Capitol are set fire to by the British Battle of New Orleans makes Andrew Jackson a national hero

T REATY OF G HENT Signed in 1814 in Ghent, Belgium No territory changed hands Americans had proved themselves as a nation
