Addiction and Recovery Basics “We must gain an understanding of the disease of addiction as well as the solution in order to understand the role of the local Community and the local Church in the recovery community, on a unified front.”

Alcoholics Anonymous developed the model of recovery that has established an entire community. “The Recovery Community”

The Power of Community Community can be defined as a group of people sharing common interests, a way of life, heritage, or beliefs. Community can be defined as a group of people sharing common interests, a way of life, heritage, or beliefs. Great comfort is found within communities of people who are just like you. You are accepted and understood. You can relate to the people and desire to spend time with them. This is called fellowship. Within a fellowship you find support, love, care, acceptance and share common ground or beliefs of some sort. These are a few elements that create the Powerful Dynamic of Community. 17 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 19 Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

The Big Book’s Offered Solution: Which leads us right into the “role” of the Church in the recovery community!

“If a mere code of morals or a better philosophy of life were sufficient to overcome alcoholism, many of us would have recovered long ago. But we found that such codes and philosophies did not save us, no matter how much we tried. We could wish to be moral, we could wish to be philosophically comforted, in fact, we could will these things with all our might, but the needed power wasn't there. Our human resources, as marshalled by the will, were not sufficient; they failed utterly.” (BB pp44-45) “If a mere code of morals or a better philosophy of life were sufficient to overcome alcoholism, many of us would have recovered long ago. But we found that such codes and philosophies did not save us, no matter how much we tried. Our human resources, as marshalled by the will, were not sufficient; they failed utterly.” (BB pp44-45) Lack of power, that was our dilemma. We had to find a power by which we could live, and it had to be a Power greater than ourselves. Obviously. But where and how were we to find this Power? But where and how were we to find this Power? (BB pp44-45)

“Well, that's exactly what this book is about. Its main object is to enable you to find a Power greater than yourself which will solve your problem. That means we have written a book which we believe to be spiritual as well as moral. And it means, of course, that we are going to talk about God.” (BB pp44-45). “Well, that's exactly what this book is about. I am spiritual because of my program and my own understanding of God. God can be anything I create Him to be. And thus the birth of “the spiritual & moral community”.
