5 Recipe for FANBOYS sentences You need: Two independent clauses One FANBOYS conjunction One comma Directions: Mix your two RELATED independent clauses together by placing a comma and a FANBOYS conjunction in between the two sentences.

6 The grumpy, sleepy gorilla accidentally missed naptime at the pre-school, but the resourceful, creative gorilla multi-tasked beautifully in gym class. The gorilla missed naptime. He was able to multi-task during gym class., BUT

9 Dependent or Independent Clause? Independent Clause A subject and verb (predicate) Can stand alone. May have a FANBOYS conjunction connecting two related clauses. Leaves you saying: “Got it!” Dependent Clause A subject and verb (predicate) Can NOT stand alone. Usually have a subordinator or word that makes it an incomplete thought (AWWWUBBUS). Leaves you saying: “What and why?”

10 For the times your sentence needs an introduction: AAWWWUBBUS Adjective -describes the noun Noun -person, place, thing, idea Verb -action -to be conjugation Adverb -describes the verb -can end in -ly Preposition al Phrase -uses a preposition Loud Happy Angry Frustrated Fluffy Silly Boisterous Cat, Sally,plays swings scratches attacks happily playfully angrily lovingly on the carpet around the house from the rafters A dependent clause + a comma + an independent clause AAWWWUUBBUS in front of an independent clause makes the clause become DEPENDENT

11 Recipe for AAWWWUBBUS sentences You need: Two independent clause One AAWWWUBBUS One comma Directions: Mix your two RELATED independent clauses together by placing an AAWWWUBBUS at the beginning of one independent clause, making that independent clause DEPENDENT. You must have a comma in between your two clauses. Formula: dependent clause + comma + independent clause

19 Directions for your activity today: Here is what I will tell you: there are 3 simple sentences, 4 compound sentences, 1 complex sentence, and 1 compound- complex sentence. I want you, as a team, to figure out which sentence is which. 1.Rewrite the sentence on the left, finding the subject(s) and verb(s) 2.Explain the make-up of the sentence on the right. Your explanation MUST discuss the sentence type in terms of our class discussion on clauses, conjunctions, and subordinators. 3.Once you have analyzed ALL of the sentences, go back to determine the sentence types. Example: I looked around the forest; it was breathtaking. It has 2 independent clauses connected by a semi-colon. In must be… (COME BACK)
