Why should you read an academic paper at all? You are required to do so, interested or not. You are going to be assessed on how much & how well you have done so. Likely to acquire skills of application & concentration that will benefit you in life. Exciting to have access to bright minds & clever thoughts & to learn something you do not know.

How do you know if the paper is worth reading? There is an abstract which should tell you what the paper is about. There are Keywords which highlight the main areas being investigated.

Extracting value from your reading Reading the paper and the message is the easier bit. You need to assess, decide on the quality of methodology and findings, its relevance & impact. There is a purpose to reading the paper – gain knowledge, confirm a suspicion, add evidence to an argument etc.

What will you gain from having read academic papers? Grown in knowledge, understanding & intangible skills. Once acquired ability to read, practice will improve your skill, reading will get easier, might move from it being a chore to something enjoyable.
