2 Colonial Reaction 1773, the Tea Act was imposed on colonists requiring a new tax on tea. December 16 th 1773, Sons of Liberty protests the tax by dumping £9,659 worth of tea into Boston Harbor (Boston Tea Party).

3 1774, the Intolerable Acts were imposed on colonists as a result of Boston Tea Party. The Colonies sent representatives to a First Continental Congress to plan a unified strategy to appeal to the King.

4 April 19 th 1775, English soldiers and colonial militia open fire on each other outside of Boston (Battles of Lexington and Concord). The British suffer 300 casualties compared to the Colonial militias 93.

5 May 1775, Second Continental Congress convened. Debate raged between the delegates about whether reconciliation with England could take place or if Independence was their only option.

6 Meanwhile militias from several colonies gathered together outside Boston to confront the English Army. June 17 th, 1775, the Battle of Bunker Hill is fought and although a British victory the English will be forced to leave Boston in March 1776.
