2  Confederates  Conservatives  Zebulon B. Vance  Mostly Democrats who favored secession.  Mainly Whigs and Democrats who had been loyal to the Union.  Became the Governor of NC in 1862.  Did not suspend “habeas corpus” in North Carolina.  (the law protecting against unlawful detention)

3  President of the Confederate States of America. He distrusted Vance and North Carolina  A nickname General Lee gave the soldiers of N.C.  Jefferson Davis  The “Tar Heel” State “God bless the Tar Heel boys”

4 Battle of Gettysburg  4,000 North Carolinian soldiers died  15,000 total Confederate troops were killed

5  The Albemarle  Fort Fisher  Confederate Ironclad ship that was used to recapture Plymouth. After the ship sank the Union regained control of all of northeastern North Carolina  Confederate Fort in Wilmington, NC. Once it fell so did Wilmington to the Union

6  Sherman in NC  Battle of Bentonville  Stopped his policy of total war because he knew many North Carolinians were still Unionist at heart  Bloodiest battle in NC. Union Victory. Total casualties for both sides numbered 4,243 men
