What is the Greenhouse Effect? How Do Clouds Create Temporary Greenhouse Effects and How Do They Affect our Climate?
2
Greenhouse effect Infrared heat is trapped in the atmosphere by greenhouse gases. Major GH gases are: Water Vapor: (most abundant GHG) evaporation of water Carbon Dioxide:(most abundant human produced GHG) source= burning of fossil fuels Methane: Source= landfills, live stock emissions
5
Watch the infrared heat react with the greenhouse gases Watch the infrared heat react with the greenhouse gases
6
Greenhouse Effect Leads to Global Warming The trapped heat in the atmosphere causes a warming period. Melting of glaciers and poles Sea levels rise on coasts Higher evaporation rates, deserts created in inland regions Crops die off
7
How Can Clouds Create a Temporary GH effect Create cooler days b/c they block some insolation from entering the atmosphere Warmer nights bc they trap the infrared heat in the atmosphere
8
Without Clouds Days are warmer b/c most insolation is received. Night temps drop more b/c there are no clouds to keep the infrared heat trapped in the atmosphere
