7  Is contact information available?  Telephone number, email, or mailing address  Is the website biased?  Bias- a prejudice for or against something  Is it an opinion? CHECK IT

8  Top-level domain- the letters that appear after the “dot” (.com,.org…) .gov- government-related .edu- educational institutions, usually from universities .org- organizational CREDIBLE URLS

9 . gov: usa.gov, census.gov .edu: mit.edu, umass.edu .org: redcross.org, idealist.org URL EXAMPLES

10 .biz .com .net  These sites are usually corporate, but may have some valuable information WATCH OUT FOR…

11  Sources- websites that provide the information you use  Copyrighted- the ideas and words belong to the author  Bibliography- a list on the last page of the sources you’ve used more on next slide… CITATIONS

12  Citation- each entry in a bibliography  MLA- Modern Language Association, a format used to cite sources  Works Cited Page- MLA style bibliography page  In-text citation – citing the source within your paper CITATIONS

13  Plagiarize- the act of taking someone else’s work and presenting it as your own  It’s considered plagiarizing if you:  Use a source’s exact words/ change a few words  “Borrow” the structure  Present a source’s ideas as your own  Plagiarism Plagiarism HELPFUL RESEARCH TIPS

14  To avoid plagiarism:  Record citations: which information goes with which source  Write down your websites  Read your sources then put them aside to synthesize (put in your own words) HELPFUL RESEARCH TIPS
