Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 KT Mandate Maximizing the technological and knowledge return to the Member States industry and society Promoting CERN’s image as a center of excellence for technology Key words are dissemination and impact

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 KT: one of CERN’s missions Push back the frontiers of knowledge in nuclear research Develop new technologies for accelerators and detectors Train scientists and engineers of tomorrow Unite people from different countries and cultures Innovation Education Research CERN Uniting People

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 The KT group: facts and figures One of the 3 groups of the Finance, Procurement and Knowledge Transfer Department 2 Sections (IP Dissemination and Life Sciences) The KT group also integrates CERN’s Development Office 15 staffs, 4 fellows, 5 students, 11 different nationalities, 46% women

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 KT Modes Business Incubation Open Hardware Licensing Service and Consultancy EU ProjectsTrainingProcurement R&D Collaborations Easy Access IP Open Source Software

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 INET and ENET 2 networks to help the information flow between the KT Group and the inside and outside of CERN INET: one or more KT representative for CERN department ENET: one KT representative per member state (often, the ILO)

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 The KT Fund: bridging the « valley of death »

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 The KT fund CERN’s incentive scheme to help transferring our Knowledge and Technologies to Society 25 projects have been financed with amounts from 16 k to 160 k CHF and are being followed up

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 KT implementation ways Transfer to Existing Companies Creation of New Companies Market Pull Technology Push Spin-Off Support

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 Business Incubator Centres of CERN Technologies Established incubators: UK STFC-CERN BIC NetherlandsNIKHEF-CERN BIC Norway NTNU-CERN BIC Greece Technopolis-CERN BIC Austriaaccent-CERN BIC Advanced pipeline: France and Finland

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 Turning CERN technologies into new business opportunities

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 Financial Times, 19.10.2012

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 STFC – CERN BIC The STFC - CERN Business Incubation Centre (BIC) pilot scheme will support businesses and entrepreneurs in taking CERN innovative technologies and know how from technical concept to market reality. A very efficient and highly visible way to transfer technologies. STFC provides: Funding: Accompanied technical visits to CERN + 40.000 GBP per company Access to expertise at STFC Business support (which may include advice on business planning, investment fund raising, finding collaborative partners) CERN provides: Use of CERN IP at favourable conditions Use of the “CERN Technology” and “CERN Spin off” labels Access to expertise at CERN – up to 40 hours free access to technical expertise and facilities (subject to availability)

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 How does it work in practice? Potential applicants submit “expression of interests” STFC and CERN evaluate them and decide who to invite to a technical visit at CERN (funded by STFC) KT co-organizes the visits and put the potential applicants in contact with technical experts at CERN who could help If the visit at CERN is successful, potential applicants are invited to formally submit an application to the scheme (this includes a business plan) A committee composed by STFC, CERN, a Venture Capitalist and ESA evaluates the requests The selected applicants are admitted to the incubator (sometimes with some caveats)

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 CERN-NTNU Screening Week

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 Screening Week 7 sessions until now in total 28 technologies screened 174 students visited and worked with the KT Group Providing a large exposure of CERN Technologies to Norwegian Industry 2 Spin-off companies have been established based on the screening week Discussions on potential new start- ups from this years edition are in progress

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 CERN Easy Access IP

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 CERN Open Hardware Licence A legal framework to facilitate knowledge exchange across the electronic design community. In the spirit of knowledge and technology dissemination, the CERN OHL was created to govern the use, copying, modification and distribution of hardware design documentation, and the manufacture and distribution of products.

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 Medical Applications Office Creation of the Office led by Steve Myers - January 2014 CERN to become established as an important facilitator of medical physics in Europe Bring all the diverse medical physics activities at CERN together under a single umbrella, ensuring that our efforts are optimised

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 12 years of ENLIGHT Collaboration Common multidisciplinary platform Identify challenges Share knowledge Share best practices Harmonise data Provide training, education Innovate to improve Lobbying for funding Coordinated by CERN > 150 institutes > 400 people > 25 countries (with >80% of MS involved) CERN philosophy into health field

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 Council then approved the creation of a Technology Transfer Task Force in 2007, and of a Technology Transfer Network (HEPTech) in 2008

Knowledge Transfer | Accelerating Innovation Giovanni Anelli, 24.02.2015 and CERN KT HEPTech is composed by Technology Transfer Offices of public research organizations active in particle, astro-particle and nuclear physics. CERN is the founding member and is represented by the KT group HEPTech provides a forum for exchanging ideas and best practices on Technology Transfer, and organizes several events with Industry (AIME – Academia-Industry Matching Events). The activites of HEPTech are reported to Council every year in September The actual Knowledge Transfer is done by the “KT groups” of the various members HEPTech is not the ENET, which is CERN network of KT representatives in the member states
