2  Definition: is when and where the story takes place in the story.  Examples: In Fall. * “ The East Side” Pg.2 “ The Church” Pg.64 * “ The Hospital” Pg. 147- 149

3  Definition: It is a person or a thing which takes action in the story.  Examples:  Ponyboy, Pg.1  Darry, Pg.2  Sodapop, Pg.2

4  Definition: Is the problem in the story with the character or characters have to face and overcome.  Examples: * The Rumble, Pg. 143-145 *Johnny’s death, Pg. 148 * Ponyboy’s court day. Pg. 167

5  Definition: Is the person or thing telling the reader what he thinks about things and what is going on.  Example:  Ponyboy, “When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home.”

6  Definition: Is a meaning, association, or emotion suggested by a word, in addition to its dictionary definition.  Examples:  Greaser, Pg.55  Soc, Pg.55  White trash, Pg.55

7  Definition: is the use of CLUDES or HINTS to suggest events that will occur later in the story or plot.  Examples:  “But this church gave me a kind of creepy feeling.” Pg.67  “We were careful with our cigarettes, if that old church ever caught fire there would be no stopping it.” Pg.79

8  Definition: The attitude a writer takes toward the audience, a subject, or a character.  Examples:  Mad, The Socs and Greasers fighting, Pg.1- 180  Accepting, Johnny’s note, ”Listen, I don’t mind dying now. Its worth it. Its worth saving those kids. Their lives are worth more then mine, they have more to live for… and don’t be so bugged over being a Greaser. You still have a lot of time to make yourself be what you want.” Pg.179

9  Definition: An insight or TRUTH ABOUT LIFE that is revealed in a work of literature.  The Theme is don’t be ashamed of what you like to do. Your who you are. Don’t let anyone change that.
