1 Guidelines for the Management of a Life-Threatening Allergic Reaction:

2 All staff members should be aware of students “under their supervision” who may require administration of epinephrine. And……be prepared to take action.

3 Before we start…DEFINITIONS: Anaphylaxis - a “life-threatening allergic reaction” Epinephrine/adrenaline - medication used to treat a severe allergic reaction Auto-injector - a disposable, pre- filled automatic injector containing a dose of epinephrine Designee/delegate - person who volunteers to administer Epi-Pen when a nurse not around

4 TYPICAL ALLERGENS

5 WHAT HAPPENS TO THE ALLERGIC STUDENT Symptoms vary from: Mild to moderate to the severe, life threatening reactions….

6 MILD ALLERGIC REACTIONS INCLUDE: Mouth: itchy, tingling Skin: hives, rash, swelling Stomach/Gut: ache, nauseous General: chills, fatigue

7 ALLERGIC REACTION PRESENTING ON SKIN

8 SWOLLEN ARM FROM INSECT BITE

9 AS SYMPTOMS DEVELOP= WHAT TO EXPECT –Mouth –Skin –Stomach/Gut –General feeling –Heart –Lungs

10 First…..RELAX…… AND BREATHE!!!!!

11 INITIAL AND IMMEDIATE ACTION: Do not hesitate! Call 9-1-1 … or have someone call for you. Student must ALWAYS be transported to Emergency Room, even if symptoms subside.

12 HOW TO ADMINISTER THE EPINEPHRINE INJECTOR… IN A FEW EASY STEPS…..

14 PREPARING TO ADMINISTER EPINEPHRINE:

15 PULL OFF GRAY CAP

16 PRESS BLACK TIP TO OUTER THIGH AND PRESS UNTIL YOU HEAR A “CLICK” SOUND. HOLD 10 SECONDS.

17 MASSAGE INJECTION SITE FOR 10 SECONDS Continue monitoring student Student must be transported to hospital

18 DISPOSAL OF INJECTOR GIVE USED INJECTOR TO FIRST – AID OR EMS PERSONNEL FOR DISPOSAL

19 WHY BECOME A DESIGNEE??? TO HOPEFULLY SAFE A LIFE………………..

21 How to become a designee: JUST 10 MORE MINUTES OF TRAINING TO INCLUDE: –Review of epinephrine administration process. –Demonstration of demo epinephrine administration. –Return demo demonstration.
