5 “If We Must Die” ◦'If We Must Die' was written as a response to what is now called The Red Summer of 1919. During this summer, there was a rise in hate crime, race riots, and overall violence towards the Black community. According to Richard Wormser, 'The three most violence episodes occurred in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Elaine, Arkansas'. ◦The first was a drowning death of a black youth who mistakenly swam into the 'white beach'. When police refused to arrest those involved, fights and riots continued, resulting in '23 blacks and 15 whites dead, 537 injured, and 1,000 black families homeless'(Wormser). ◦In DC, riots began after the death of two blacks, and finally in Arkansas, officers interrupted a meeting of sharecroppers, shots were fired, and a white officer was wounded. The local sheriff called for a manhunt to find the person who shot the sheriff, and 'hundreds of armed men' crossed into Arkansas from Mississippi, firing at every black they saw. Eventually, the US army had to restore order and 25 blacks were officially dead. However, many people believed that as many as 200 were killed but their bodies were dumped in the Mississippi River (Wormser). These stories often led to more race riots in other communities and even public lynching's.
