2 Spanish has five vowels sounds. They are never silent, and their pronunciation is the way they are written. Every single vowel sounds in a word. The “u” is silent when it follows a “q,” in “gui,” and “gue.” They are: As in father or bat As in they or Emily As in beet or hit As in hot or open As in room or boot

3 Spanish alphabet has more consonant sounds than the English alphabet. The only one that counts as a letter on the alphabet is They are: As in chocolate chico As in you llave As in canyon ni ñ o As in burrito carro

4 There are other sounds that you need to know; They are: Before “e” or “i” sounds as a “S” and before “a,” “o,” or “u” sounds as a “K” cigarro, casa Before “e” or “i” sounds as a “H,” to sound as a “G” add an “u” general, magia, Guillermo, guerra is always silent. hola sounds as “H” in English Juan sounds as “K” in English queso

6 ACCENT MARKS The accent marks go on a vowel. They emphasize the stressed syllable. There are rules for accent marks that you are not going to learn in this course. You will need to memorize the words with their corresponding accent mark.
