2 How does someone work out the number of calories they burn when running? To work out how many calories you burn when running you have to Multiply your weight by how many kilometers you run and then multiply the product by 1.036. So the formula is: Number of calories burnt=Kilometers x Weight x 1.036

3 How do you work out how far you need to run to burn the same calories in a doughnut? Let’s take the Dunkin doughnut’s chocolate frosted cake doughnut as an example, it has 370 calories. If someone weighs 50 kilogram then using the formula: Number of calories burnt=Kilometers x Weight x 1.036 I will calculate the number of calories burnt for each kilometer ran in the next slide and show my results in a table.

5 Table discussion and calculations By looking at the table we observe that someone has to run 8 kilometers to run to burn a bit more than there are in the chocolate frosted cake doughnut. However we can find the exact answer by dividing the number of calories by the product of 1.036 and the weight, so the formula becomes: Number of kilometers= Number of calories/(1.036 x weight.) So number of kilometers= 370/(1.036 x 50) = 370/51.8 =7.14 kilometers.

7 How can knowing how to do arithmetic with decimals help you make health decisions? I think knowing how to do arithmetic with decimals is a big advantage and it will make you make better health decisions because you will know when to eat junk food and when not to. It will help because you would know how much you need to run to burn the calories in junk food.

8 I developed my balanced skills because now I know that if you want to burn the same calories that there are in a doughnut you would have to run a lot of kilometers, I developed balanced because it is all about having a healthy body and mind. Formulas in math are important because they help you calculate answers to different weights and calories by just substituting the given results in the formula and find what is asked for.
