Synthesis & Decomposition Reactions
2
Types of Chemical Reactions Most chemical reactions fall into the five families of reactions that we will be studying in our course: 1. Synthesis 2. Decomposition 3. Single Displacement 4. Double Displacement 5. Combustion Today we will focus on the first two: synthesis & decomposition reactions.
3
Synthesis Reactions Have the skeleton form: Two or more reactants combine to form a single product. A + BAB
4
Synthesis Rules Two rules to follow for specific synthesis reactions: Examples: 1. Metal + O 2 Metal Oxide 2. Metal Oxide + H 2 OMetal Hydroxide 2 Ca + O 2 2 CaO Na 2 O + H 2 O2 NaOH
5
Decomposition Reactions Have the skeleton form: A single reactant decomposes to form two or more products. ABA + B
6
Decomposition Rules Three rules to follow for specific synthesis reactions: Examples: 1. Metal OxideMetal + O 2 2. Metal HydroxideMetal Oxide + H 2 O 3. Metal CarbonateMetal Oxide + CO 2 Calcium CarbonateCalcium Oxide + CO 2
