Chapter 4 polyatomic ions
2
Polyatomic ions Ions made up of more than 1 atom The charge is still a superscript! Example: SO 4 2- is sulfate Sulfate has 1 sulfer atom and 4 oxygen atoms. When this group of 5 atoms come together they act like a single ion.
3
There are 22 polyatomic ions you must memorize. The following sentence will help: Nick the camel ate a clam supper in Phoenix with Crista. Words in red are connecting words with no other purpose.
4
Nick the camel ate a clam supper in Phoenix with Crista. The main words require you to know the # of consenants and # of vowels. The first letter(s) represent the element. Nick: 3 consenants and 1 vowel Nick: 3 oxygens and charge of -1 Consenants= # of oxygens, vowels=charge
5
Nick the camel ate a clam supper in Phoenix with Crista. Nick: nitrate NO 3 - Camel: ??? Clam: ??? Supper: ??? Phoenix: ???? Crista: ????
6
Ate vs. ite -ate =polyatomic ion with oxygen (oxyanion) -ite =polyatomic ion with 1 less oxygen than – ate, but same charge Example: nitrate = NO 3 - Nitrite = ???
7
bi In chemistry bi means add a hydrogen to the compound. Hydrogen also carries a +1 charge with it. So When H is added to carbonate (CO 3 2- ) it becomes HCO 3 -
