St. Justin the Martyr (100-165 AD) 1) The most important 2 nd century Apologists 2) Born in Samaria of heathen parents => to Christianity after a long search for the truth 3) Wrote 2 apologies & a dialogue w/ Trypho the Jew. In Chapter 82, he wrote: “that every one who can speak the truth, and yet speaks it not, shall be judged by God”

St. Irenaeus of Lyon (130-200 AD) 1) Second bishop of Lyon (France) and a disciple to Polycarp 2) Born in Smyrna (Turkey), raised Christian, moved to Rome then settled in Lyon 3) Best-known work “Against Heresies”; a detailed attack on Gnosticism in 5 books; quoted from 21 of the New Testament

Hippolytus of Rome (170-236 AD) 1) A Roman priest 2) Principal work “Refutation of all Heresies” discovered in the 19 th century. 3) Historically important is his treatise “the Apostolic Tradition” (215 AD) => detail description of the sacraments of ordination, baptism, and Eucharist

Tertullian (160-225 AD) 1) Born in Carthage (North Africa), studied law, became Christian, ordained priest, long career in defending Christianity 2) Several writings in different areas: apologetics, dogma, and spiritualities 3) Famous quotes: “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church”, “What has Athens to do with Jerusalem”.
