Gasunie is one of the biggest gas infrastructure companies in Europe. Within the company, we give safety the highest priority; it forms the basis of our license to operate. We abide by the strictest safety, health and environmental standards, both for our own employees, external contractors and the surroundings. Gasunie’s safety policy is thus characterised by a proactive approach which is designed to prevent accidents, incidents and hazardous situations.
3
Gasunie wants to create a safe, healthy and productive workplace for everyone. We recognise that misuse of and addiction to alcohol or drugs can compromise the ability of employees to carry out their tasks. This can have negative repercussions for the member of staff himself, his surroundings and his colleagues, and for Gasunie as a whole. Our primary consideration is to avoid any impairment caused by the use of alcohol or drugs. This applies equally to external contractors, temporary hire staff, interns and trainees and transporters. Remain alert at all times when you are working. If in any doubt, always ask or suspend activities where necessary.
4
General rules By “drugs” we mean any intoxicating, tranquilising and/or mind-altering substances as defined in the Opium Act This includes medicines which affect concentration or the ability to drive and operate machinery Alcohol is also included in this category of drugs, due to its addictive properties, although it is not covered by the Opium Act Smoking is not only harmful to health, it is also highly dangerous in places where gas is being transported The rules below also apply to third parties who are working for Gasunie Don’t consume alcohol or drugs while working or driving The use of alcohol and/or drugs while working or driving is prohibited Being in possession of alcohol or drugs is also not allowed On exceptional occasions, for example during company receptions, you can drink low alcohol beverages There will also be a wide range of non-alcoholic drinks available at such events
5
Be aware that traces of alcohol and drugs may remain in your bloodstream Be aware that the “morning after” effects of alcohol and drugs can also reduce your response times and other capacities The effects of alcohol and drugs can vary per person and between different people It’s therefore not possible to give upper limits at which you can guarantee there will be no adverse effects Be aware of any potential side-effects of medicines Be careful of any side-effects of medicines you may be taking. Always read the leaflet that comes with your medicines, which contains information about possible side-effects Notify your manager if you are taking medicines that could affect your performance Discuss your use of medicines with your manager if they could affect your performance
6
Smoking There is a smoking ban at all (construction) sites which form part of a gas handling location and during all activities connected to gas supply Smoking is only permitted in designated places Smoking is permitted on construction sites that do not form part of a location that is handling gas, such as on the pipeline route. As soon as there is a possibility of work involving the potential release of gas (such as work on an installation containing gas), the area concerned must be cordoned off and a smoking ban implemented within that area Before a project starts, specific agreements must be made about smoking and the isolation of gas handling systems. These agreements must be communicated during the introduction of the project by the contractor
7
Do not hesitate to intervene if someone at work is using alcohol or drugs or contravening the smoking ban Keep a general eye out for unusual behaviour in colleagues Don’t sit idly by if you suspect someone is misusing alcohol or drugs Do not hesitate to intervene if you see someone using alcohol or drugs or smoking, and challenge the individual about it Discuss the situation with your line manager Also get in touch with the body that issued the work permit (where applicable) If the situation is serious, the line manager should notify the company doctor
