Science Safety Rules Zero Tolerance
2
Always be prepared to stop quickly and listen to instructions. Quiet, safe behavior avoids accidents. If an accident or spill happens, tell the teacher immediately. Small accidents can cause big problems. Follow all directions exactly and perform only authorized experiments.
3
Read experiments through carefully before doing them. Start to work when you are told and follow directions carefully. If you don’t understand something – ASK! Always wear Goggles and protective aprons when hazardous materials and open flames are being used in the classroom. Long pants and full toe shoes (no sandals or flip- flops) are mandatory in these situations.
4
Always secure long hair, remove loose clothing, and take off jewelry. There is to be no eating, drinking, or chewing within the classroom. Never taste or smell chemicals or solutions. Assume all chemicals are toxic and never drink from laboratory glassware. Never use chemicals that are not properly labeled. If a chemical is spilled on you, immediately flush the affected area with water (for 15 minutes) and call for help.
5
Safely clean up broken glassware and put it in a proper container. Be sure the open end of a heated test tube is pointed away from all lab personnel. Never handle electrical equipment with wet hands, or while standing in a wet or damp area.
6
Cosmetics may not be used in laboratories. Keep your work area neat and clean. Clean lab equipment and wash your hands after each lab. Do not leave the lab until it is completely clean.
7
Always be careful when you use dissecting instruments. Exercise care and great respect when working with plants and animals. Always wear gloves and goggles when dissecting preserved specimens.
8
Fire Chemistry and the Four Classes of Fire The Fire Triangle Oxygen FuelHeat Main Point: If you take away any part of the Fire Triangle – the fire will go out!
9
Know the Four Different Classes of Fire: –Class A: Wood/Paper (use Extinguisher) –Class B: Liquid – Oil Based (use Extinguisher) –Class C: Electrical (use Extinguisher and Electrical Shut-Off) –Class D: Burning Metal (Use Sand!)
10
To put out any type of fire you must remove one part of the triangle. The most common way to put out a fire is to smother it. Never leave a flame unattended. Keep table clear of books and paper. Never leave a flame unattended. Never heat a closed system – –Flask with a stopper –Unopened soda can
11
Response to all Fires at BTMS Take Initial Action: Stop-Drop-Roll; Spray Fire Extinguisher Evacuate – Go To Fire Drill Station
