Aim: How did people who lived in the cities enjoy themselves in the early 1900’s? Do Now: What are some activities you enjoy? What would life be like if you couldn’t do those activities?

Vaudeville was so popular among immigrant audiences because you didn’t need to speak the same language as someone to understand physical comedy. Also, vaudeville shows were inexpensive which caused it to become one of the only forms of entertainment that was affordable to immigrants and it showcased entertainers from ethnic backgrounds

Construction of Buildings 4.) These new tall buildings were called skyscrapers 5.) Growing cities needed more space for the growing numbers of people moving to the city. They decided to build upwards instead of outwards to fit more people. 6.)The major problem that was caused by the construction of these buildings was traffic because it allowed more people to fit in smaller spaces.

Trolleys 7.) Suburbs began being developed because of the creation of trolleys 8.) Subways soon began being developed as well.

Department Stores 9.) Macy’s is the department store being shown. 10.) The items that are being sold are… dry goods, carpets, oil, cloths, matting, shawls, cloaks, laces, and embroideries. 11.) Department stores were going to become popular because they were going to have cheap goods. Also, it was one store that you could go to and buy all your needs.

Popular Sports 12.) Baseball became the “great American pastime” in the early 1900’s. 13.) Sports like baseball, football, and basketball became popular because people had more interest in leisure activities and sports provided an escape from the pressures of work.

Ragtime became popular because it had a lively, happy sound. It was a fun type of music that allowed people to really enjoy themselves. 15.) Entertainment united Americans because it provided a shared popular culture for people of all classes and backgrounds.
