5 E LEMENTS P RINCIPLES V OCABULARY : Emphasis : is a principle of art which occurs any time an element of a piece is given dominance by the artist. In other words, the artist makes part of the work stand out, in order to draw the viewer's eye there first.

6 L INES THAT CREATE AN E MOTIONAL S TATE Types of Line: -Actual/ Continuous -Implied -Gestural -Contour -Calligraphic

7 O RGANIC AND GEOMETRIC S HAPES Organic Shapes: Natural or from nature; curvy Geometric Shapes: regular shapes such as rectangles or squares. Contains of angles.

10 C OLLOGRAPHS Collage Blocks or collage printing The term collograph refers to a collage board where materials are assembled on a flat base or plate to form a relief block with different surface levels and textures.

11 R ELIEF P RINTING

12 Barren: A convex printing tool used for burnishing the paper on the block. You can use other objects like a wooden spoon to burnish as well.

13 Bench Hook: A device used to secure wood or linoleum block while cutting.

14 Brayer: A roller made of rubber used to ink a block.

15 Burnishing: Rubbing the back of printing paper on an inked block or plate to produce a print.

16 Gouge: A tool or blade for removing wood or linoleum from nonprinting areas of a block.

17 Knife or Chisel: A wood or linoleum cutting tool with a flat blade.

18 Lino Cut: Linoleum that is gouged, cut, and printed in relief. Remember: Only the raised areas will print on the paper. The cut areas will be left blank.

19 Other terms to know: Pull: To print an image. Relief: Printing from the raised portion of the block. Rolling up: The application of ink to the block with a brayer.

22 P ABLO P ICASSO Pablo Ruiz y Picasso, known as Pablo Picasso (Spanish: 25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and stage designer who spent most of his adult life in France. As one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, he is widely known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore.

25 S TEP 1: D ESIGN & C UT YOUR P LATE OR B LOCK Beginning Printmaking Carving 1 Directional Carving -You will be using both sides of the block to cut easily. -Create your design. Then use graphite paper to transfer your design onto your linoleum block. Go over the transfer with a sharpie marker. -Use your cutting tools, gouge and chisel to cut your design into the block. Remember to use a bench hook to hold your block in place. You will be graded on your linoleum block. Important: Remember to cut away from yourself when carving your block!!!
