3
3 Types of Data Stored in SharePoint
4
4 The Problem of Big Files and Big Content DBs SharePoint Storage can be problematic for –Large Files –Big Content Databases –Big List or Big Document Libraries SQL storage can be expensive compared to other data content Collaboration can lead to excessive SQL storage and “Out of Disk Space” issues 60-80% of content in SharePoint can be unused or used only sparingly in their lifespan Version info can bulk up the size of the content database that will never be accessed Many organizations would like to keep the advantages of having content managed by SharePoint but would like to use lower cost external repositories Large files impact upload, download and index crawl negatively
5
5 The Solution: EBS/RBS based storage Starting in SharePoint 2007 SharePoint began to support blob storage outside of SharePoint EBS or External Blob Storage is a SharePoint driven API RBS or Remote Blob Storage is a SQL driven API Bit different but in the end both mostly work the same RBS will be the standard moving forward Quest will introduce a tool into this space in early 2011
6
6 Business Advantages of using Remote Blob Storage Moving Large Files (from about 5MB or larger) will result in some performance advantages –Upload and download times for the document will be faster if the repository is local –Search indexing and crawl will be faster Repositories can be managed out of SharePoint that otherwise would not be –Will require File Uplifting to be added to Storage Maximizer 6
7
7 Introducing Storage Maximizer for SharePoint EBS (v1.0) and RBS (v1.1) storage solution for SharePoint Supports NTFS and Azure Cloud Storage in v1.0 –More repositories to be supported over time Supports attached Storage such as StorSimple Rapid install Integrated management Rich rules set Ability to set Scopes from Site Collections down to Document Libraries Supports multiple repositories within a single install

9 Integrated Install Only uses existing SharePoint services and functions Installs as Farm Feature No installed agents, external hardware or other system requirements Configured through Central Administrator Site Lightest installation available Ensures that when SharePoint is up and running SMSP is up and running
10
10 Integrated UI – directly through Central Admin

12 What We Plan for Its Future RBS Support will be part of 1.1 File Uplifting (make files managed through SharePoint but not migrated into SharePoint) Expanded Cloud support Reporting and Alerting Backup and Recovery Guidance More Rules and flexibility 12
