Day 2 Discussion Slides Rob and Salman Kickoff Meeting 1 September

Opening Remarks The following slides summarize those points that resonated with people during todays discussions based on my notes Certainly this list is far too aggressive to do all of it… We discussed under-committing and over-delivering – and the importance of picking initial topics that are actionable and deliverable… Jim mentioned using FCE to strengthen ASCR partnerships – should we focus on HPC issues? He said “improve compute land so that its useable for HEP” (this is in principle more than just HPC, in fact HPC is evolving to a more data- oriented future; we should discuss these aspects)

Discussion points − Mini Apps What we capture in a mini app depends on what issue we are trying to solve Important to have apps to benchmark performance as well as demonstrate workflows and data dependencies as well as serve as teaching aides Interesting to have a mini app before/after optimization (or transformation) Have a workshop on how to write a good mini-app

Discussion points − Docker/Cloud R+D needed to optimize for HEP use cases (all frontiers) Fun to do FCE can do both R+D as well as write a how-to guide Another way to get HEP applications to run on modern technologies (and an alternative way to run on future HPC systems) Another candidate for an FCE Tutorial − Networking Write a perfSONAR best practices document Address bottlenecks in HEP networking (not just HEP) Start with ASCR HPC centers and then move to labs Characterize pathways, chokepoints etc. (including software “handshakes”) Implement dashboard for tracking transfers

Discussion points − Training Raise the game for people to write HPC functional code and understand issues Survey what training is currently out there (what can we do that is effective if what’s out there is not?) Broad space – need to pick one or two things Web page of pointers to on-line training that is worthwhile Develop software thought leaders (experts) Piggyback on other summer schools Rob Ross: week long focused engagements worked well Make recommendations on what type of computational classes HEP students should be taking Leverage ANL recorded lectures (and others) to form basis of class (idea of overlays to produce a coherent “course”) Important to have context – a physics problem to solve and not just computing in the abstract

Discussion points − Fellowships Appealing – requires little infrastructure for FCE Leverage – new resources offered to the community Fellowships need both computational and science program for individuals to have long term career path in field Fellowships would raise awareness and importance of computational experts Not cheap 2 fellows would cost ~$0.5M Need to make rock solid case – fellows not the tradition with OHEP

Discussion points − HEP Planning What are HEP’s computational needs 5 and 10 years out? What computational capabilities will reside in the 5 labs during those times? (We know for the ASCR facilities — what about the HEP facilities, need to discuss this) What is the gap? (between potential needs and computing available?) Never been done as a field (to my knowledge) − Outreach… − Common Software efforts What role should FCE have here? In development and maintenance Promote a more “open source” culture?

Discussion points − What did I miss???
