Example 1 Use Ratios Brandy paid $6.75 for 3 pounds of mixed nuts. At this price how much would 5 pounds cost? Let x represent the price for 5 pounds of mixed nuts. Plan Write a proportion for the problem. *Since the rates are equal, they form a proportion. So, Brandy can buy 5 pounds of mixed nuts for $11.25.

Example 2 Use a Scale Drawing Jane wants to make a doll that is a replica of a friend. The scale that she will use is 1 centimeter on the doll will represent 2 inches on her friend. Her friend’s foot measure is 8.5 inches. What will be the size of the doll’s foot? The size of the doll’s foot will be 4.25 centimeters.

Example 3 Find Percent of Change State whether each percent of change is a percent of increase or a percent of decrease. Then find each percent of change. a. original: 18 b. original: 125 new: 18.99 new: 106.25 The percent of increase is 5.5%. The percent of decrease is 15%.

Example 3 Find Amount After Sales Tax A mountain bike costs $675. If the sales tax is 5.25%, what is the total price of the bike? The total price of the mountain bike is $710.44.

Example 4 Find Amount After Discount A magazine subscription is $52 a year if you buy it every week off the newsstand. If you buy a subscription, you can buy it at a 15% discount, what is the discounted price. The discounted price of the magazine subscription is $44.20.
