Alternative Fuels: Solar Energy By Nicole Brait Tatiana Veiga Kayla Carson Mr. Dawson Environmental Biology Period 1

Solar Energy energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy; "the amount of energy falling on the earth is given by the solar constant, but very little use has been made of solar energy (www.Dictionary.com)

Uses Solar energy is used for heating water for domestic use, space heating of buildings, drying agricultural products, and generating electrical energy.

Inventors Of The Solar Cell Daryl Chapin, Calvin Fuller and Gerald Pearson of Bell Labs were not planning to invent a solar cell that would revolutionize the PV industry. There wasn’t even a PV industry to revolutionize when their work commenced in 1952.

Cost The best current deal on new 50 watt solar panels is about $4.25 a watt--$212 for a 50 watt panel, in quantity Other new panels of about the same size can produce 120 watts, but cost $700-- $5.83 per watt.

Buyers Of Solar Panels People in general that don’t really like their heating system, many big companies, Factories, schools systems

History Recognized: 1839 Built: 1883 Who Found It: Alexandre-Edmond BecquerelAlexandre-Edmond Becquerel Why: To conserve energy

Is it in Use now? Yes it is. We use it to power cars. We use it to heat homes. We use it to heat schools. We use it to heat company's.

When is it Useful It is very useful in the winter when its cold. (Solar Heating) It is least useful in the summer when it is hot. (Solar Heating) In the summer when you have lots of sunlight its more useful. (Solar Power) In the winter when there's not sunlight its less useful. (Solar Power)

Advantages-Disadvantages Advantages: Its Clean, doesn’t cost much when its started, renewable. Disadvantages: Start up could be costly, you need sun to power it.

What We Think! Nicole: “I think that it’s a very useful source and everyone should use it.” Tatiana: “I think that it useful and it going to run the heating companies out of business.” Kayla: “I think that it’s a useful way of getting heat.”
