UDL Guidelines: Examples and Resources Week 4 EDU620 Julie Pacific

UDL Principle and Checkpoint Principle Three Multiple Means of Engagement Checkpoint 7.2 Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity

Example to Support Checkpoint 7.2 Video - Beginning Their Journey: Five-Year- Olds Drive Their Own PBL ProjectsBeginning Their Journey: Five-Year- Olds Drive Their Own PBL Projects Age Group – Kindergarten Content Area – All Areas

Beginning Their Journey: Five-Year-Olds Drive Their Own PBL Projects Auburn Early Education Center has a problem- based curriculum The students complete long-term projects that evolve out of their own curiosity Teachers use real-life scenarios to teach the children a variety of subjects The students are motivated and engaged because the learning is authentic

Key Considerations for Checkpoint 7.2 How does this help learners meet the goal? -A project based curriculum keeps students interested in the lessons and highly motivated -The projects pertain to real life and students are excited for authentic learning How does this account for the variability of all learners? -Teachers are using a variety of methods -Differences are taken into account Are the activities and information valuable to learners? -Yes, because these five-year olds are learning authentic life lessons -Assignments and projects are relevant to their lives

Future Practice This resource is something I will definitely want to use during instruction opportunities in my future practice. I want to teach young children so it is very inspiring to see five year olds with such a passion for learning. The idea that taking a real life scenario or activity and using it as a teaching tool for the children is ingenious. Young children are naturally curious, and when they are allowed to study a subject of their choosing they are more likely to be engaged.
