Impact of New Technologies “The Internet has had an effect on the entire publishing process, from production to distribution, to marketing, promotion, copyright management, etc. Whether we like it or not, the traditional methods of creation, access, and use are all undergoing a historic change.” (“New Business Models in the Digital Age,” dosdoce.com study )

Creation of published research 1.Subscription-based Journals & Monographs Major research communication venues; most journals now online, and concentrated in few hands e.g. Elsevier, Springer & John Wiley 2.Open Access Journals/Textbooks & other Digital Modes 3.Repositories e.g. University-sponsored, Working Papers, Academia.edu

Research to Publication: Who Profits? Creation of published research
6
Pressures to Alter Publishing Landscape High prices of academic journals Highly cited journals costlier – Often owned by big publishing conglomerates Demand for 24/7 free access Difficulties confronting certain researchers Potential of New Technologies Remains hard to be Innovative Creation of published research
7
Access to Published Research Finch report (UK, 2012) explored model to “expand access to the published findings of research.” Tensions “between the interests of key stakeholders in the research communications system.” Ithaka report (2007) “University Publishing in a Digital Age,” called for change. Has pressure for Open Access altered publishing landscape?
8
Finch report recommends “Gold Access” Average ‘Author Publishing Charge’ (APC) $900 – Many closer to $2500. Yet, one study estimates average cost of producing article only about $450. Open is Not (Really) Free Access to Published Research
