Unit 7 Wetlands
2
An area of land that is covered with a shallow layer of water during some or all of the year.
3
Marshes Grassy area covered by a shallow layer or stream of water.
4
Swamps Look like flooded forests, with trees growing in the water.
5
Bogs Often found in cooler places. The water tends to be acidic and mosses thrive here.
6
Estuaries A place where fresh and salt water meet and are mixed by tides. The Chesapeake Bay is an example of an estuary and is the largest in the United States.
7
The Everglades: A Unique Environment The Everglades provide habitats for many rare or endangered species and are a very fragile environment. –Florida panthers –Wood stork –Roseate spoonbill –Manatee (sea cow)
9
–Because manatees swim so slowly, they are easily injured by the propellers of powerboats. They have become an endangered species as a result of increased boating.
10
Importance of Wetlands Provide habitats for MANY living things. Provide natural filtration; the thick network of roots trap waste. Help control floods by absorbing water from heavy rains.
