3 Elizabeth I – death in 1603 ended Tudor dynasty James I – Elizabeth’s cousin; king of Scotland; 1 st Stuart  Poor judge of people & clashed with Parliament  Believed in divine right of kings – God’s agents on earth  Puritans – important part of House of Commons Protestants inspired by Calvinists Wanted to make Church of England more Protestant

9 The Restoration – Parliament restored the Stuart monarchy  Charles II – the “Merry Monarch,” returned to London in 1660  Parliament – restricted some rights of Catholics & Puritans  Charles II – sympathetic to Catholics  James II – 1685-1688, open & devout Catholic; forced to leave throne
