The Spanish- American War SWBAT: Explain how the end of the Spanish-American War effected U.S. imperialist efforts

Do Now 1890’s public opinion was swept by a growing wave of Jingoism- an intense form of nationalism calling for an aggressive/war-like foreign policy Would the anti-imperialists or pro-imperialists support this policy? Explain. How does this relate to our current political landscape?

Causes of the War Economic- US had $50 million invested in Cuba Cuban Revolution of 1895 endangered these investments Humanitarian- Americans sympathized with Cuban rebels; Americans upset by tactics of Spanish Generals (Cubans were imprisoned & forced into camps where many died of starvation & disease) Imperialism- Opportunity to get land from a weak Spanish government

Causes of the War Yellow Journalism- William Randolph Hearst & Joseph Pulitzer exaggerated & distorted events to create an emotional effect

Causes of the War The de Lôme Letter- a letter from the Spanish ambassador to the U.S. was intercepted & in it, he called the President of the US (McKinley) a “weak coward”

Causes of the War Sinking of the USS Maine- the ship exploded in Havana Harbor killing 260 Americans - U.S. officials apparently believed it was a mine, but the American public blamed Spain

War and Results War is declared in 1898, only lasts 4 months War is declared in 1898 -“a splendid little war” - 2,446 Americans died, most from disease & infection Teller Amendment- When US declared war, agreed not to annex Cuba & leave power to the people Treaty of Paris (1898) 1. Cuba gains independence 2. US pays Spain $20 million for the Philippines 3. Spain gives U.S., Puerto Rico & Guam

War and Results Platt Amendment- Cuban independence came with “strings attached”: US given right to lease land for naval base (Guantanamo Bay) & intervene in Cuba to maintain peace & order
