Chapter tests are both written and speaking. We use the headsets to record our speaking tests. Projects are generally worth 100 points. We typically do 1 project per chapter (if time allows).

Materials Students are required to bring the following materials to class daily: Laptop computer with charger Multiple Pens (any color ink) and/or Pencils Binder or Notebook with pockets for handouts – whichever works best for you to keep organized! Descubre Nivel 1 textbook and workbook 100 bound index cards for bell ringer verbs
9
In this CLASSROOM … We are kind & respectful We never give up We work hard & dream BIG WE LAUGH OFTEN We take risks & make mistakes We encourage one another
10
I will keep students for 10 minutes of personal detention after school for any behavioral disruptions.
11
Let your Spanish flourish!
12
Cell phones Please TURN OFF your cell phone and put it away in your purse/backpack once the bell rings. If you are caught with your phone during class (or it goes off because you thought you had it on silent), I will hand deliver it to Coach Murphy for your parent to pick up.
13
Being late to class If you come to class after the tardy bell rings, then you are considered late. If you arrive late to class, please bring your pass to me before you sit down. If you don’t have a pass, you will get a pink slip from me for detention!
14
Daily Bell Work As soon as you reach your seat, please look at the board for the daily Bell Ringer verb and get started. The daily verb will always be posted on the board for you with instructions. After I take attendance, we will talk about the verb together.
15
Starting Class We start every class with a greeting. Teacher says “¡Hola clase!” Student’s respond “¡Hola Señora Stribling!” Then we go over the dates in Spanish: Ayer Hoy Mañana
16
Amen.
17
Daily Quizzes I give a daily 10 point quiz over the vocabulary or grammar that we learned in the previous class period to see how much you retained. When everyone is finished, we go over the answers to the quiz so you can see how you did! Vocabulary quizzes are translating from English to Spanish….. Spelling & accent marks count!
18
Homework check Homework is graded for completion. (Did you know that many college professors will often assign homework, but won’t pick it up for grading?) Completion means that you did ALL of the work to the best of your ability. I will stamp your homework so you know that you got all of the homework points. We will go over the answers to the homework together in class! You are responsible for grading your homework. Please ask questions while we go over the answers to the homework, so we can clear up any confusion!
19
Taking Notes There are many reasons for taking lecture notes. This year students will be taking notes on paper. If you want to type them later you can certainly do that too. Learning is an active process and note-taking is one of the steps in that process. Several studies have found that students who use the computer to take notes are more likely to take verbatim notes, a kind of “mindless transaction”. When tested on the material, the students who used laptops earned lower scores than those who wrote their notes out – both when they were tested on the material immediately after a lecture AND when given several days to prepare for an exam. Making yourself take notes forces you to listen carefully & test your understanding of the material. When you are reviewing, notes provide a gauge to what is important in the text. Personal notes are usually easier to remember than the text. The writing down of important points helps you to remember them even before you have studied the material formally.
20
Effective Note taking Don’t write everything down! Your goal isn’t to write down your professor’s lecture word for word, but to understand and record the main points of it. When possible, translate the lecture into your own words. Write in phrases, not sentences. Ask questions if you do not understand something. If you missed information, leave a space to fill it in later. Compare notes with classmates. After class, edit your notes, labeling main points, adding recall clues (textbook page) and questions to be answered. Key points in the notes can be highlighted with different ink colors. Step 1 Step 2 Step 3
21
Silent Signals Need the teacher’s help --- I will come to your desk.
22
Bathroom Emergency You MUST wait until I nod my head yes or no. If I nod my head yes, please remember to sign-out & take the pass with you!
23
My Attention Signal You will be working with partners in class this year, so it is important that you know what my attention signal is. When I hold up my hand I will say, “Clase, denme cinco” (Class, Give me five). That means the entire class should be absolutely silent and still within 5 seconds.
24
Paper Heading First & last name Date (written in Spanish) Class Period Assignment page & Activity # (Example: TB pg. 101 Act. 2)
25
Turning in papers Students will pass their paper up their row towards the teacher’s desk. The student in each row who is sitting closest to the teacher’s desk will need to make sure that all papers are collected & are facing the same direction.
26
Sharpening Your Pencil Students should always sharpen their pencils before the tardy bell rings. Remember that you should always bring MULTIPLE writing utensils with you to class daily!
27
Movement During Class Unless the assignment requires it, students will stay in their assigned seat during class. No one gets up to throw away trash --- trash should be kept at your desk to throw away at the end of class.
28
Dismissal at the end of the period At the sound of the bell, stay in your seat until you hear me dismiss you by saying goodbye (in Spanish). Leave quietly and in an orderly manner.
29
Computer issues If you have any problems with your laptop you need to e-mail the help desk at help@mtstmary.edu.help@mtstmary.edu NO student will be allowed to leave the classroom to get help from the technology department unless we are currently working on a project that requires using the laptop! In your e-mail make sure to include: your 1 st and last name, whose class you are in, & the specific issue that you are having with your computer.
30
School Fusion Our class website is located at www.mtstmary.edu.www.mtstmary.edu You must log-on to get to our class page. Make sure you click on your class period. (I teach Spanish 1 & 2.) My daily PowerPoints are posted in the folder on the homepage. The PowerPoints are labeled by the date that I taught the information & the level that it’s for (SPAN 1 or SPAN 2).
31

Dictionary versus Translator
33
DyKnow Anytime that we use the laptops in class, I WILL be monitoring you! Yes, I can see EVERYTHING that you are doing on your laptop!
34
Make-up Work Policy The MSM handbook says “when a student is absent she should check SchoolFusion for any missed work and assignments. She should contact the teacher if there are any questions concerning the assignments that are posted on SchoolFusion.” The MSM handbook states that make-up work should be completed within 2 weeks of the absence. I strongly encourage students to turn- in make up work ASAP, so they can get caught up with the rest of the class. When you are absent from Spanish class, I will enter a zero-missed in the gradebook for both the daily quiz & the homework. This is a reminder for you to turn-in any make-up work ASAP! I only give make-up quizzes when you miss more than 2 classes in a grading period (quarter). You must come during an Activity Period or after school to take a 10 point make-up quiz. *If you need to make up a chapter test you MUST come during an Activity Period. Speaking tests can only be made up after school!
35
My classroom door will be locked at all times. If I forget to lock my door, please remind me ASAP! If you have to leave the classroom for any reason, you will have to knock to re-enter.
36
What happens if there is a fire/fire drill? Any time that you hear the fire alarm, you need to EVACUATE the building ASAP by going to the nearest exit. Once you are outside, you will ALWAYS report to your HOMEROOM teacher.
37
What happens if the tornado sirens go off? If the tornado sirens go off while you are in Spanish class, we will exit the classroom orderly and quietly. We take shelter in the stairway next to Mrs. Melandri’s classroom. There will likely be standing room only, so be prepared to pack in tight!
38
What happens if there is an intruder? “Mr. Lindow, please call the office” Teacher will lock the door and close the blinds. Get on your knees in the back corner…away from the door and windows. Remain quiet as a mouse and still as a rock until the all clear is made.
