Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests Yachting WAPerth 2011 How to set a GPS Reference Point What I do is when I get on to the water I wait until the Start Boat is in position. Pull right next to the Start Boat (race course side) Why next to the start boat ? I put in a GPS Mark and ask the Race Officer what he is thinking in terms of the bearing and distance. I then proceed to roughly my position at the Mark which I have been allocated Then when the correct reference is confirmed (Mark 4 – start boat) it is easy to make the small changes to the Mark I’m using for that day by changing the rough Reference Point you have entered from the Start Boat. Once you have corrected the co ordinates for the GPS point you entered at the start boat this now becomes the Reference Point we work to.

Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests How to change a GPS Reference Point Go to Active Goto Screen Curser down to the -------- under the Mark Number Press enter quickly Then press Waypoints. The waypoint that is active will show Press enter again and the full screen will show

Move Curser to the right until out get to the number you want to change. Move Curser up or down to change each number. Once the S reference points are correct keep moving the Cursor to the right and it will move down one line to the E (East) reference points. Again move across to numbers that you want to change. Hit enter again quickly. This will complete the changes.

Protecting your Rights, Promoting your Interests Be careful not to change S or E otherwise you will find you are suddenly 3,000 nautical miles from the Mark (Northern Hemisphere). You have now entered the reference point you are working to. Distance & Bearing Now hit Page again until you will get a screen that has 2 data boxes.
