What is Urban/Metro? Social and cultural center of region; buffered by agriculture Borders of Seattle; limits of easy access to city core; infrastructure Different from rural; more infra structure/needs met close by Urban<> metro; urban is in the city Density**, zoning regs (mixed use); metro=fewer services Larger cities as center of activity; metro surrounds it Population size (concentration); metro=network of people who live work and play; several cities Strict: economists: concentration land/size/people metro: one urbanized area/other cities, too. Economically interdependent Cosmopolitan*=draw of city center/arts/culture/diversity of activity NYC: urban: density, could be smaller and larger’ metropolitan=all surrounding areas Strict: 50,000+ pop Density threshold/metro: adjacency of cities Scale Urban vs rural Key Problem? w/ econ downturn, longer-term econ transformation; and free trade impacts Pop density/ lack of sustainabilty in conversion of agri land to housing/cars. Etc… Air pollution, housing prices, infrastructure Homogenization of city urban design Maintaining relevance (economic globalization) Funding issues tied to econ downturn; sustainability of city finance Seoul: housing affordability* probs in job centers Environmental issues. Transport**/pollution*/access to safe water. Designing attractive and sustainable urbanizing places Segregation/uneven development/ how manage growth. Aging infrastructure and dwindling tax bases. Increasing segregation within cities/decay of urban core Achieving equity in access to services. Inequality** among cities and neighborhoods: how address without hurting “Success” Sprawl Food desert Large pops

A time of transformation… Uneven metropolitan growth Decentralization of metropolitan areas (suburbanization)—continuing 20th century trend. Spatial mismatch (jobs, people) Concentrated poverty/social isolation (uneven) Racial and economic segregation Tax/service disparities MANY Metropolitan governance & governance structures Housing quality up, housing affordability down. Homeownership 67% nationally Occur in a context of technological change and globalization
