Presentation on Storage over Internet Protocol By Kulpreet Singh Gill B00708563

Facebook Storage  Has 30,000 servers supporting its operations  Stores upto 300 PB of data  15 billion photos uploaded in total  8 billion average daily video views from 500 million users with 760 years of watch time each day  Last year 3X growth of data

SoIP – Storage over Internet Protocol  Traditional Technology - DAS(Direct Attached Storage), NAS(Network Attached Storage), SAN(Storage Area Network)  SoIP - Merging of Fibre Channel technology and IP based technology that allows accessing storage devices over TCP/IP network  Storage over IP products are designed and implemented in such a way that they support proper operations of the devices that use underlying Fiber Channel that operates on the bottom using iSCSI.

Advantages of SoIP

Connectivity – Storage and Networking Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Internet SCSI SCSI Command Set – SCSI Bus Protocol iSCSI is the standard track document that specifies the serialization of SCSI command set to TCP/IP

Elements in IP Storage Shared of dedicated IP based MAN or WAN Device I/O SAN Device I/O

SoIP Infrastructure

Lab Environment SAN implementation using Opensource – OpenFiler to enable TCP/IP enabled communication over iSCSI Windows 2008 VM with 100 GB HDD and iSCSI enabled on it 64 Bit Windows 10 Machine Windows 2008 VM with 100 GB HDD and iSCSI enabled on it

Outcome and Server Configuration  Openfiler - At the core level we are using Openfiler that use any of the storage server and make it iSCSI, NFS or CIFS server.  It is an interface that simplifies the storage resources and provides every utility to manage storage in browser based interface.  We are using Openfiler to enable iSCSI communication at the storage server, which is 2008 and windows

Accessing the openfiler and iSCSI target  In Web browser open the openfiler by providing its ip address or fully qualified domain name.  Enter the username and password.  It displays the GUI for openfiler with the details of the associated storage includes – Status, System, Volumes, Quota, Shares, Services and Accounts.  It’s the user interface where you can make partition, provide access rights and allocates quota to the users. Thus all changes made can be saved at the configuration level of the storage.  Under iSCSI target we gave name of the virtual disc of the storage server.

Openfiler Console

Windows 2008 configuration steps  iSCSI target defines the location where data physically resides, that we gave on server 2008 can be configured as.  Server Manager -> File and Storage Services -> Services ->iSCSI to configure ISCSI. Under iSCSi - iSCSI virtual disc wizard, allocate storage from hard disk and assign virtual disk name.  Now this storage at server is managed by the GUI or openfiler and can be used to manage data remotely.

Accessing Storage from Windows 10 machine  In Web browser open the openfiler by providing its ip address or fully qualified domain name.  Enter the username and password.  Goto systems to view the content of the storage.  Virtually openfiler console is connected to the storage server to make changes at the configuration level, however this can be accessed from windows 10 machine to view the storage across the network.

Drawbacks  Being highly scalable it poses security thereat too as there are huge number of remote users who may be intentionally try to gain unauthorized access to the storage. The fact is none of the technology is perfect, and we cannot achieve the following things together: Efficiency Security Scalability/Cost effectiveness We have to sacrifice one of the above.

Conclusion  SoIP hold the upper edge in today’s storage technology that overcomes the all geographic barriers and provide scalable environment to ensure remote site connectivity to have access to the storage site.  SoIP is first choice for implementation and maintenance with easy support available.
