You have three tasks to complete for this homework: a)You are to design in PowerPoint a background page to use to mount both your class and homework tasks on. The next slide contains an example of this. b)Place the photograph of your class brainstorm onto your background and add annotation. c)Join Pintrest, create yourself a free account and ‘like’ the the Waseley Hills Art Department Page. 2 Homework Task
17
You have two tasks to complete for this homework: a)You are to produce a mood board based on a Myth or Legend of your choice. Choose carefully as you will be basing your project on this theme! The next few slides contains examples of this, you must choose images that include both faces and skulls!. b)Write a design brief for your controlled assessment, use the ‘help sheet’ and your notes from your lesson as a guide for this piece of work. Present both Tasks (a) & (b) onto your background sheet which you designed in last weeks homework. GCSE Graphic Communication – Controlled Assessment: When Mythology meets Music MOOD BOARD Student Name – S/ GH 3 I’m a middle grade C because I’m presented to a fair standard. No key words are present and all of the images are very similar. Extra pictures could have been added to give more excitement to this layout.
22
GCSE Graphic Communication – Controlled Assessment: When Mythology meets Music MOOD BOARD Student Name – S/ GH 3 I’m a low grade C because I’m presented well but the layout is very boring, nothing is overlapped, no key words are present. I could also have been improved by knotted or platted rope being added to the sheet. Skull like shapes have been included but are not clear..
23
GCSE Graphic Communication – Controlled Assessment: When Mythology meets Music MOOD BOARD Student Name – S/ GH 3 I’m a grade D because the images used are pixelated and have poor resolution. There are gapes in the background and no key words included. No skulls have been included.

You have two tasks to complete for this homework: a)You are to present the ‘skull pictures’ which you photographed in school on to your background sheet. Add some annotation about this task. See the next slide for an example of this. You could even use ‘Photoshop’ to add effects to these pictures. b)On a new sheet of paper, create a technical drawing or an illustration from one of your pictures, I suggest that you use a pencil for this task. GCSE Graphic Communication – Controlled Assessment: When Mythology meets Music MY PHOTOGRAPHS - SKULLS Student Name – S/ GH 4 I have taken many photographs using my mobile phone camera. I have tried to show in my composition the many different aspects of the three dimensional surfaces of these skulls. Some were human reproduction skulls and others were original animal ones. Using direct source material will help me to produce better illustrations and designs for my final poster. I have also used Photoshop to change the colour of my images. I’m a high grade A because I’m presented to a high standard. I have left lots of room in the middle for my work to be mounted onto and I have included all of the key information in the boarders.

Mono Prints Ghost-Print A ghost-print is a print we do after we finish a mono print. We put white paper over the ink that’s left. We use a roller to roll the paper, to make sure the ink sticks to the paper. A mono-print is a form of printmaking. We use ink of any chosen colour and we roll it out on the desk. Then we take the excess ink off and put a white piece of paper over it. We put the picture we want to print on top and we trace the outlines, remembering about adding mark making, to make it look more interesting.

In my print I can see a centrally composed skull. There are many areas of shading, in particular I feel the very dark voids where the eye creators are create a most sombre mood. The back area I have initially left blank so that the skull becomes the main focus of the design work, this is another experiment which is building up the observational studies into my portfolio. I feel that the quality of line in this print is very sensitive, I have tried to keep this form of mark making delicate to show the fragile nature of the original skull which my print was taken from. This came from the science laboratory at school. The texture in the print helps create an atmosphere of uncertainty and gives the illusion of death, I hope to use this image further later on in my project in the background of my poster design. I feel I could improve the area surrounding the mouth, this section needed more time spending on it. It was hard to see what I was doing as the Mono-print process only reveals the final work at the end! I now have a much better understanding f the mono-print process, even though it is very time consuming, I feel this technique partially suited the subject of the skull.

Even though this coincides with the Catholic holiday called All Soul's & All Saint’s Day, the indigenous people have combined this with their own ancient beliefs of honouring their deceased loved ones. Gigantic sugar skulls are made from 50 year old molds for the competition at the Feria de Alfinique in Metepec, Mexico. These sugar skull makers have been making artisanal sugar for generations. Dia de los Muertos is a holiday for remembering and honouring those who have passed. It is a festive, joyous time of celebration. Day of the Dead is Mexico's most important holiday, which means they invest a lot of time and money into celebrating Dia de los Muertos, moreso than any other holiday. The most popular Day of the Dead icons are skulls and skeletons, which pop up everywhere on the days and weeks leading up to Dia de los Muertos. Day of the Dead skulls and skeletons are whimsical and colourful, rather than frightening or macabre. They symbolize mortality and the cycle of life and death. On this page, we'll talk about skulls and other popular Day of the Dead symbols. The prominence of skulls as a Day of the Dead icon harkens back to the days of the Aztecs. Back then, skulls were important icons that illustrated their belief in the existence of an active afterlife. In Mexican culture, skulls continue to symbolize death and rebirth.
