Sunflowers and Acid Rain

Introduction  The purpose of this experiment was to find out how acid rain effected the growth of sunflower seeds.  The control in this experiment was tap water  The variable in this experiment was acid rain

What is acid rain? What is acid rain?  Acid rain is rain but it contains pollution. Here are some pictures.  BeforeDuring After

Materials  Plastic cup  super growing pellets  Triple beam balance scale  Sunflower seeds  Water or 10% vinegar water  Ruler  Data sheet

Methods 1. Add super growing pellets to cup. 2. Add 3 tablespoons of water to expand. 3. Plant 3 seeds per cup. 4. Weigh cup on triple beam balance. Record weight. 5. Add tap water or vinegar water to cup. Weigh again and record data. 6. Cup will be placed under grow light. 7. Observe the container daily and note any indications of growth(by observations and measurement) and compare to other containers in the experiment. While observing indicate any special care given to the plant. (Did you need to add more or less water? Did you need to rotate the plant?) 8. Record observations, measurements, and comments in the plant growth diary. Once the plant begins to grow, you will need to draw a detailed picture of the plant including the appearance of leaves and stems. 9. Each day, repeat steps 3 through 8.

Ask a QuestionAsk a Question  The purpose of this experiment was to find out how acid rain effected the growth of sunflower seeds.  My question: how does acid effect the growth of the sunflower seed?

State Your HypothesisState Your Hypothesis  If I plant a sunflower seed……  I think it will grow but not as much as the ones with tap water

Identify Control & VariableIdentify Control & Variable  control- tap water  The variable is that there is tap water and acid rain

Test Your HypothesisTest Your Hypothesis  If I add acid rain water to my sunflower seed, then it will grow but not as rapidly as the tap water because acid rain can damage the growth and well being of the plant.

Collect & Record Your DataCollect & Record Your Data  Date dry wt. Wet wt. Difference height  Day 1 11.2 g 60.7 g 49.5 g o  Day 2 80 g 80 g 0 0 day 3 65.6 g 72.9 7.3 g 0 day 4 70 g 77.5 g 7.5 g 0 day 5 8.5 g 8.7 g.2 g 0 day 6 63.2 g 65.5 g 2.3 g 0 day 7 59.9 g 77.4 g 17.5 g 0

Interpret Your DataInterpret Your Data  The sunflower seed grew as I predicted and it grew but faster than I expected.

State Your ConclusionState Your Conclusion  my hypothesis was supported because the tap water plants grew more rapidly than the acid rain. The effects of acid rain can damage the plants on earth and we will have no oxygen.
