Examples of AS Stretch and Challenge Questions

A group of gymnasts need to devise a floor routine for a competition. Their coach is deciding which teaching style to use between Command and Problem Solving Style. Suggest the advantages of each style and outline the benefits of the gymnast completing a cool down after her training session. (12 marks)
3
Mark Scheme Command Style 1.Teaching make all of the decisions/no learner input 2.Clear objectives 3.Little opportunity for ill-discipline 4.Good for large groups 5.Effective in dangerous situations 6.Saves time 7.Good with beginners/gives performer ideas if have no previous knowledge Problem Solving 8.Develops gymnasts creativity 9.Develops independence/able to work on own 10.Increases confidence when success achieved 11.Increases motivation/satisfaction 12.Develops cognitive skills/better understanding 13.Better with experienced performers Cool down 14. Keeps heart rate elevated 15.And keeps capillaries dilated 16.Which means blood continues to go to muscles 17.Enabling CO2/lactic acid to be removed 18.Maintains venous return mechanisms 19.Minimise pain associated with DOMS 20.Psychologically, helps evaluate session/set targets/relaxation

A coach is teaching a group of novice swimmers. Identify the most appropriate teaching style for this situation, giving reasons for your answer AND what are the principles of training that the coach needs to apply to the training session to make it more effective? 1.Command Style 2.Teacher makes all of the decisions 3.Learner has no input 4.Situation is potentially dangerous 5.Group are beginners – need clear instructions/need lots of help 6.Less distractions through command style/less opportunity to mess around 7.Swimming is a complex skill 8.Good if it is a large group 9.SPORT 10.Specificity 11.Make task suited to individual/meet individual/requirements of sport/similar to sport 12.Progression 13.Increase training demand 14.Overload 15.No pain no gain/body must find it testing 16.Reversibility 17.Use it or lose it/must train regularly or will lose fitness 18.Tedium 19.Make training session interesting/avoid boredom 20.FITT 21.Frequency – how often we train 22.Intensity – how hard training is 23.Time – how long session lasts 24.Type – method of training e.g. weights, circuits.

A coach is teaching a group of students how to do a somersault in trampolining. Using examples identify the forms of guidance a coach may use in this situation AND the benefits of completing a warm up prior to the session. Types of guidance 1.Verbal Guidance 2.Spoken instructions/telling the performer what to do 3.E.g. Tuck in legs/kick legs out 4.Visual Guidance 5.Creating a mental picture of the skill/seeing/watching 6.E.g. Demonstration/picture 7.Manual Guidance 8.Physical support by coach 9.E.g. holding onto performer during somersault 10.Mechanical Guidance 11.Using equipment to support performer 12.Trampoline belt/rig Benefits of warm up 13.Increase the heart rate 14.Which will get more blood and therefore more oxygen to the muscles 15. Vasodilation of the arterioles, which means the muscles get more blood 16.Increased production of synovial fluid 17.Increased temperature reduces the viscosity of the blood so it flows better through the vessel 18.Increase elasticity in the muscles 19.Increased nerve impulses which will improve reaction time. 20. Psychologically: makes you more alert,/increases arousal levels/improves focus

Banded Marking The total Mark Scheme has come to 30 points Therefore:Total Score 15-20 = 75%Level410 – 12 marks 10– 14 = 50%Level37 – 9 marks 5 – 9 = 25%Level24 – 6 marks below 5 Level 11 – 3 marks Quality of language and balanced argument will determine exactly the total score.
