MAIN IDEA INTERNAL PROBLEMS AND INVASIONS SPURRED THE DIVISION AND DECLINE OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE WHY DOES THIS MATTER? The decline and fall of great civilizations is a repeating pattern in World History.

A CENTURY OF CRISIS After the end of Pax Romana Rulers had no idea how to deal with the giant empire and its probs. Rome’s Economy Weakens Pirates disrupt sea trade Raised taxes Agriculture overworked soil Eventually…food shortages and disease = population declined

Military Trouble Roman soldiers less disciplined and loyal Roman government had to hire mercenaries foreign soldiers who fought for money (paid by Rome) Feelings of loyalty faded for CITIZENS too! Became indifferent (apathetic, not caring)

Emperors attempt reform AD 284 DIOCLETIAN Strong willed army leader who became Emperor MADE HUGE IMPORTANT REFORMS!! Restored order, increased strength BELIEVED THE EMPIRE WAS TOO LARGE AND COMPLEX FOR ONE RULER!! Divivded the Empire 1. East (Greek speaking) 2. West (Latin speaking)

Diocletian Retires AD 305. His plans for orderly succession FAILED. Civil War breaks out 4 Rivals competed for power Among them? CONSTANTINE

Constantine moves the Capital Moved the Capital City from Rome to the Greek City, BYZANTIUM Center of power shifted from EAST to WEST Protected by massive walls Renamed to CONSTANTINOPLE Constantine dies. EMPIRE WILL BE DIVIDED AGAIN!

WESTERN EMPIRE CRUMBLES Took place over many years Germanic people lived on the northern Roman Empire border 370 Mongol Nomads THE HUNS Moved into that region and to escape….the Germanic people invaded Rome land Western Empire (Rome) couldn’t stop them AD 410 Germans overran Rome
