T1D Type 1 Diabetes
2
T1D~ Definition Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM) A chronic condition in which the pancreas makes little or no insulin because the beta cells have been destroyed. The body is then not able to use the glucose (blood sugar) for energy. IDDM usually comes on abruptly, although the damage to the beta cells may begin much earlier. The signs of IDDM are great thirst, hunger, a need to urinate often, and a loss of weight. To treat and manage the disease, the person must inject insulin, follow a diet plan, exercise daily, and test blood glucose several times a day. IDDM usually occurs in children and adults who are under the age of 30. This type of diabetes used to be known as “juvenile diabetes,” “juvenile-onset diabetes” and “ketosis-prone diabetes”. It is also called type 1 diabetes mellitus.

T1D ~ Symptoms

Myth #3: Diabetics can’t have sugar Fact: Moderation is Key Focus on: Healthy Foods
5
Myth #2 Fact: Individuals diagnosed with diabetes can still live happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives. As long as they monitor their blood sugars and stay healthy, it shouldn’t stop them from playing the sports and activities they love. Diabetics can’t play sports
6
Myth #1: Insulin is a cure to Diabetes Fact: Insulin is not a cure, it only helps diabetics manage their diabetes. Until we find a cure, insulin will only help diabetics attempt to control their diabetes. Let’s raise awareness for a cure to diabetes!
7
Though T1D account for only 10% of all cases of diabetes is it estimated that for every T1D patient at least 15 healthy people are directly or indirectly impacted! The disease impacts the patient's family, health care system, economy, and the medical research community.

A Day in the Life of a T1D…
9
“Do you have the good kind or bad kind?” “My friend’s brother’s girlfriend’s grandmother had diabetes!” “Did you know that there’s a ______________ (insert hypothetical cure like alligator pee on a water lily) that will cure your diabetes?”
