UT-H Resource Discovery Committee Charge –To identify and recommend appropriate methods for indexing and classifying information resources available on our websites. –To identify and recommend appropriate products to facilitate the discovery and retrieval of information resources. –Issues to be examined included metadata in general, metadata schemes, specific metadata elements which might be useful, controlled vocabularies and thesauri, and search engines, including advanced engines that will categorize and organize information for us. –Membership: Leah Krevit, George Rogers, Judith Booker, Cynthia Burks, Dawna Jarvis, Misty Hajek, Kathy Johnson, Susan Lawson, William Weems, Beth Ardoin,

UT-Houston Search Engine Mission Create a search mechanism of both hardware and software that will allow for quick access of UT-Houston Web content stored on multiple Web servers located on campus.

Search Engine Components UT-Houston search engine made up of various components. –Information server –Search utilities: Web spider or crawler, search forms, search results display templates –Web documents tagged with defined HTML tags

Search Engine Spider Search engine spider will crawl approved web servers across the university. –Crawled by permission only –Web server must be submitted by server administrator to OAC for review prior to crawling by search engine spider. –All restricted and/or client confidential data must be removed from public access web servers before the spider will crawl.

Web Search Engine Basics Web content consist of: –HTML pages –MS documents –Documents converted to HTML Search engine indexing tool (spider or crawler) –Web crawler – crawls once per day starting at 6:oo pm Search engine forms –Basic SearchBasic Search –Advanced SearchAdvanced Search

Our Responsibility??? As web authors, we must take the initiative to categorize and classify our web documents so users can find them. This is not an option. This is part of the web authoring process that needs to be done when building a web resource. If you do not tag your documents users will NOT be able to efficiently find them.
