Cabinet purpose is to advise and help the president carry out his/her duties Presidential Cabinet is made up of… – VP – 14 secretaries – Several other top officials Cabinet secretaries administer large bureaucracies

Cabinet secretaries must… – Be approved by the Senate – Have a background that is compatible with the department he/she will head – Satisfy the special interest groups – High level administrative skills Huge department (lots of $ and people)

Cabinet secretaries usually are… – College graduates with advanced degrees – Leader in fields of industry, business, law, etc

Frances Perkins – 1 st Woman secretary (FDR – 1933)) Labor Robert Weaver – 1 st African American secretary (LBJ - 1966) HUD (Housing and Urban Development) Lauro Cavazos – 1 st Latino American (Reagan – 1988) Education

Executive Office People who give specialized advice and information that directly assists the president – They do not require congressional approval

Examples of Executive Office People WH Office of Communications (press secretary and communications director, speechwriters, etc.) WH Counsel’s Office (provides the President with legal advice) Council of Economic Advisors (provides advice on regulation of the economy)

Examples of Executive Office People Council on Environmental Quality Office of Management and Budget (supervises much of the federal bureaucracy, provides input on budget issues) US Trade Representative Office of the First Lady

Examples of Executive Office People Office of Nat’l. Drug Control Policy (headed by the “drug czar”) National Security Advisor and his deputies (Susan Rice) – Helps with American military and foreign policy Homeland Security – (Lisa Monaco)
