Aim #22: Was the War of 1812 the second American Revolution? Do now! Look at the “Comparison of Strength in 1812” chart and answer the corresponding questions and please have out homework

(I) CAUSES OF THE WAR OF 1812 a. Freedom of the seas b. American resentment of British c. American belief that British in Canada were arming and encouraging Native Americans to attack d. American ambitions to annex Canada and Florida (II) Federalist Grievances and the Hartford Convention a. New England Federalist Party met to discuss their grievances concerning the ongoing War and some delegates called for NE to secede from Union (didn’t like Jefferson’s Embargo Act or Madison’s Nonintercourse Act; foreshadowing of later on…the Civil War) b. Wanted there to be a 2/3 congressional majority for declaration of war, admission of a new state or disruption of foreign commerce (i.e. an embargo)

(III) RESULTS a. Stalemate (at best) for US and Britain b. Treaty of Ghent restores pre-war status quo c. Nationalist pride (Star Spangled Banner) d. Increased westward migration e. End of Federalist party (seen as unpatriotic since not supportive of war) f. Challenges 1. Primitive transportation 2. Growth of manufacturing needed
