1 Horizon2020: concrete opportunities for us An Goris Research Policy Advisor Faculty of Law

2 So far… ERC, Marie Curie, VET = bottom-up research funding = researcher sets the research agenda Big part of EU funding = top-down  EU sets the research agenda  There is a lot of money in this! (+/- 35 billion €) 2 pillars: o “Industrial Leadership” o “Societal Challenges”

3 Societal Challenges Europe has identified 7 societal challenges: major concerns shared by all Europeans 1. Health, demographic change and wellbeing Health, demographic change and wellbeing 2. 4 Societal Challenges We want you to apply for this funding! How?  Understand structure: o 7 Societal Challenges (SC) Work Program (2 years; 2016-2017) Calls (4-5 for each WP) -Topics (run for 1 or 2y) Topics are the concrete calls/texts you respond to (but understand structure in which they are situated) Many topics  we can help you identify the ones relevant to your research Contact me, Daniëlle De Vooght (group) or Research Coordination Office

6 How does this work? Deadlines in 2016 or 2017 o Yet start getting your partners together now! International partners are necessary o Partner = outside KU Leuven (not different department/faculty!) o Usually: at least 3 partners, at least 3 EU countries

7 Finding partners How/where do I find partners? o Your own network o Events (partner speed dating) COST: existing networks about a topic; organize events www.cost.eu o Contact me/research coordination office o Online partner search tool (some topics)

8 Who can apply ? ZAP o Potentially with support from postdoc (co-promotor) o Always in cooperation with international partners (“consortium”)

9 What’s in it for you? Funding o Differs, but 2 PhDs and/or 1 postdoc not unusual (150k/y) o LRD helps with the budget! International network Experience o For future similar applications o For other (more fundamental/bottom-up) applications
