2 October 16, 1970 Letter from Columbia University School of Public Health Programs: 4 levels of (nursing) care, daycare, home care, public housing with mentors, diagnostic nurse, and sheltered workshops/day centers Solutions: Better housing, better services (social and medical), non-isolation Method: Family, volunteer agencies, non- profits, municipal, state and federal agencies Outcomes: Better, more appropriate care (body and soul), lower costs

3 ….age friendly communities That are friendly to all ages, that encourage multigenerational opportunities, meaningful exchanges and mutually beneficial experiences. 44 years later… can we make transformational change last!!!!

4 What is necessary? Leadership to manage collaboration of public and private corporations, politicians, citizens of all ages, diverse culture, varying expectations Leadership to organize and lead in inclusive implementation Leadership to assure commitment by all services sectors to : ◦ Engage with the planning processes in their community, suburb, neighborhood ◦ Identify and document community needs, ◦ Identify and write grants and funding sources, ◦ Expand services and programs, for substantive change.

6 An inventory of non traditional resources, both active and idle For example: Churches during the week School buses and schools on the weekends Libraries Town halls, VFW and Granges Social clubs (Elks, Moose, Masons) Theaters during the day Community colleges and universities Hospital cafeterias YMCA, Girls and Boys Clubs, JCC Firemen, bus drivers, police, students, librarians, residents Private businesses (early bird specials beyond food) Plans to provide extended, affordable programs

7 The glue…accessibility Physical access: transportation, parking, hours of activity Technology access Language Coordinated support services at home: navigators, assessments, home care Integration across settings (technology )

8 Who is in charge? Who is responsible for organization, implementation, governance, quality assurance, liability, sustainability Collect data on outcomes (hard and soft) Get started…..who and why
