Unit 17
2
Understand the meaning of the term MOTIVATION Understand the significance of motivation in the workplace with focus on Maslows Hierarchy of needs and its potential in organisations. Appreciate that motivation can also come from within
4
Motivation refers to the extent to which an individual gives their best all the time when working for a business. Most companies will want to find ways to encourage workers to do this because it means the businesses aims and objectives are more likely to be met...... and as a result customers needs will also be met!
5
A motivated workforce is likely to be more committed to the business and want it to do well. De-motivated workers will not be fully committed to the business and as a result not carry out their job as well as they could. They may take more time on breaks, talk more when working or not concentrate on tasks, leading to less or lower production.... Leading to less customer loyalty and less repeat purchase...
6
Motivated staff tend to produce better, higher quality work, They are interested in what they are doing, And take pride in what they do. Motivated workers are often more flexible, they are prepared to do more for the business in terms of different tasks.. Willing to learn... All increasing the output of the business, customer satisfaction and repeat purchase.

Beaverbrooks says....
8
To understand what motivates workers, it is important to understand what makes them take a job and what makes them want to work – Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
9
Physiological Needs – These are at the bottom of the pyramid. People have physical needs such as to eat, to be warm and be in good health. To satisfy these needs people must have food, clothes, shelter and heating. Most workers are motivated to work because they want to earn the money to buy these things! Therefore, money is a motivating factor as it lets the workers satisy these needs.
10
Safety Needs... People want their environment to be safe. When working for a business people want to know that they are physically safe, so health and safety are important. They want to know that they will be paid on time and a regular amount Workers become demotivated when they work for a business where there is a poor health and safety record or where there is no job security
11
Love and belonging.... People want to feel accepted as part of a group, like a family at home or a team at work. They want to be trusted and be able to support other The business may encourage teamwork, raising money for charity etc to make workers feel part of ‘the team’.
12
Self Esteem Needs.... People want to feel that others respect them for what they can do. They want to respect themselves too, feeling that they have achieved something and are good at a task. Combating bullying, racism and anything else that makes workers self esteem being lowered is important here.
13
Self actualisation.... This is the highest order need, according to Maslow. It is the ability to realise your full potential. Is there scope for promotion, extra responsibility, career progression etc, Promotion is a good motivating factor for some employees,
15
Maslow suggests that there are a number of different reasons why people come to work. They have a job to survive in the first instance, but then they also want to satisfy the higher order needs, such as self-esteem and self-actualisation. Some businesses strongly believe that PAY is the most important motivator. These businesses tend to use the pay system that directly links pay and the amount of work
16
Maslow suggests that once a need has been satisfied it no longer is a motivator. This implies that if workers have satisfied a particular need then offering them more of the same does not motivate them... Do you not want any more money?
17
What motivates you? What are the consequences of not being motivated? What are the advantages of being motivated? Motivation from within!!!!!!!
18
A business can only have a limited amount of influence regarding motivation of its workers. This is because motivation is something that comes from within an individual. Some workers are more motivated than others – some students are more motivated than others! They have more enthusiasm for the work and seem to work much harder. There has, however always been a debate about how much motivation comes from the workers themselves or from the atmosphere in the organisation.
19
A survey in 2008 suggested having an interest in the job you are doing is the biggest motivating factor NOT the pay. A work – life balance and flexible working can be a big motivator, Relationships with colleagues are also seen as motivating factors.
20
Create a revision guide for Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and motivating factors. Don’t forget to list advantages and disadvantages.
