Aim: How do scientists clone organisms? Hello Dolly!! http://gslc.genetics.utah.edu/units/cloning/
2
What is a Clone? A clone is an organism that is genetically identical to the organism from which it was produced. Exact Genetic Copy
3
Do the cells of our body make exact copies of themselves? Yes. When? GrowthRepair Mitosis
4
What process ensures that the offspring will be genetically identical? DNA Replication
5
Asexual Reproduction: X Genetic Information (DNA) Parent Offspring How many parents? How does the genetic Information between the parent and offspring compare?
6
Cloning vs. Asexual Reproduction Cloning is a technique that accomplishes the same end result as __________reproduction. What is the end result? The production of offspring with identical genetic information as the parent. asexual
7
Can we clone organisms that normally reproduce sexually? Scientists have been able to successfully clone animals since 1996 (maybe earlier).
8
How is this done?
9
Steps of Cloning: 5) When the baby is born, it will have the same genetic information as the donor. 4)The egg cell with the new nucleus is placed inside the womb (uterus). 3)The nucleus of the donor somatic cell is placed inside the egg cell. 2)The nucleus of a ‘somatic’ cell from a donor is removed. (keep the nucleus) 1)The nucleus from an egg cell is removed. (Discard the nucleus)
11
Why Clone? 1.Clone Stem Cells 2.Clone Organs 3.Revive endangered species 4.Reproducing a deceased pet 5.Clone humans??
12
Extra Material: 1)Do you think identical twins are clones? Explain. Can you hypothesize how identical twins are formed? 2)http://gslc.genetics.ut ah.edu/units/cloning/http://gslc.genetics.ut ah.edu/units/cloning/
13
How are Identical Twins Formed? + SpermEgg Fertilization Zygote Mitosis Twin #1Twin #2
14
Why do Identical Twins look alike? Zygote After the cell is fertilized, it begins to divide by Asexual Reproduction (mitosis). Therefore the genetic information is identical in each of the cells.
15
How are Fraternal Twins Formed? + SpermEgg + SpermEgg Zygote
16
Why do Fraternal Twins look different? Zygotes They are formed from two different sperm and two different eggs.
