Common errors Don’t put school name or initials in story unless absolutely necessary. A person is a “who,” not a “that.” Which vs. that The band is an “it,” not a “they.” Class designation: seniors, juniors, etc. Jan. 5, not January 5th First person “we, us, our” “Over” vs. “more than” “About” vs. “approximately”

Nouns & verbs Begin a sentence with “there is.” Place verb in front of noun for no good reason. Separate nouns from verbs for no good reason. Place nouns in front of adjectives for no good reason. Use “to be” verbs when they’re unnecessary. Redundant, wordy verbs.

Number errors 9 p.m. — not 9:00 p.m.. $20 — not $20.00 $20 million — not 20 million dollars Numbers: spell out one through nine. With a few exceptions, write 10 and above as numerals. Exception: age. The boy is 2 years old. He is a 2- year-old boy. Exception: first word in sentence.

Editing The Albert Einstein High School National Honor Society held it’s first meeting at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in the library. At the meeting, the members of the NHS voted to cancel its Halloween dance. They voted to do this because no members of the NHS could find dates. The dance was originally scheduled for the 29 th of October. Because no members could find dates, the National Honor Society cancelled its Oct. 29 Halloween dance.

Editing Last Saturday, the AEHS french club held a fund-raiser, the club raised over 400 dollars. The money will be used to defray costs of a trip to Paris during the month of March. The club raised money by selling croissants before school classes began in the morning. To help pay for its March trip to Paris, the French Club raised more than $400 by selling croissants before school.
