INTRODUCTION TO THE TEMPERATE DECIDUOUS FOREST

MAP OF TEMPERATE DECIDUOUS FOREST

CLIMATE AND RAINFALL The Yearly average of the temperature in this biome is 10 degrees Celsius with a high of 30 degrees Celsius and low of –30 degrees Celsius with 750 mm to 1,500 mm of rain per year.

AUTOTROPHS The beech-they can reach up to 40 meters tall and are dome-shaped and they produce beech nuts They prefer clayey and airy soils. Sycamore- live in hilly and mountainous northern woods only, up to 1800 m above sea level. Can reach up to 25-30 m tall. Oak- Reach up to 40 m tall. Can live up to 500-1000 yrs. Used to make timber.

AUTOTROPHS Aspen- Can reach up to 25 m tall. They like warn and sunny areas. They are resistant to industrial waste, and actually grow well in town. Walnut Tree- Can reach up to 20 mt tall. Their fruits are stone fruits with a green fleshy part which, when dry, releases its woody stone which contains edible seed rich in fats. The most important walnut producing country are the United States. Lime Tree- Can reach up to 30 mt tall. The most common lime tree is the Tilia platyphyilos.

AUTOTROPHS

HETEROTROPHS American Bald Eagle- (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus) It's name in Latin means "the sea eagle with a white head". The Bald Eagle generally lives forty-five to fifty years in captivity and twenty-five years in the wild.It stands between 30.4 and 36.4 inches tall, or about as high as an average office desk. It has a five and a half to eight foot wing span.Their diet is made up of mainly fish, but also includes small sea birds, mammals, and reptiles Duckbill Platypus- (Ornithorhynchus Anatinus) It weighs between 1 1/2 and 5 1/2 pounds. It is from 26 inches to 39 inches long. As a carnivore, it eats frog, shrimp, larvae, fish and tadpoles. In the past it came close to extinction. Least Weasel- (Mustela Nivalis) The least weasel is the smallest carnivore in the world. It has a slender body, which are 4 to 10 inches long. A male's weight ranges from 1.5 to 8.75 pounds. A female's weight ranges from 0.8 to 4.3 pounds. The least weasel's diet consists of mice, rats, moles, small birds, bird's eggs, rabbits, and poultry.

HETEROTROPHS Coyote- (Canis Latrans) Coyotes can weigh from 15 to 44 lbs. Their bodies are 30 to 40 inches long and their tail is 12 to 16 inches long. They are about 15 to 20 inches tall. They eat mainly small mammals, like rabbits and mice, reptiles, fruit, insects. When there is only large prey, like deer, coyotes will form packs of three to eight members. American Black Bear- (Ursus Americanus) This bear can run up to 25 miles per hour, which is very quick for its 220-594 pound body. The length of this bear's body is usually 5-6 feet from nose to tail and 32-38 inches from paw to the top of its shoulder. They live in most of North America. They will eat virtually anything, but 75% of its diet is made up plants and other vegetation, while the other 25% is made up of, carcasses, honey, small mammals and insects. White Tail Deer- (Odocoileus Virginianus) The white-tailed deer can be 3 to 3 1/2 feet at the shoulders. Males can weigh up to 400 pounds, and females from 70 to 200 pounds. They graze on green plants in the summer and nuts and acorns during the winter. They will also eat twigs and the buds of birch, maple and conifer trees in the winter.

MAN'S INFLUENCES PROS While man has cause tons of harm to this area, we have began acting to preserve it. We have began efforts to plant trees back within it. We have issued laws against hunting any endangered animals and have done a great share to make sure this biome does not be completely destroyed. CONS We have caused deforestation with the building of our homes destroying habitat. We have hunted some of these animals to the brink of extinction. While at the same time we try to help there are many people who are trying to stop these efforts in order to get more land or build more homes.
